Treatments for Hair Loss – Medical Breakthroughs

There have been treatments for hair loss that have been marketed in many ways, as many have promised a cure for hair loss. There has been much confusion for men who suffer from hair loss because of being inundated with various information on how to prevent hair loss.

The American Hair Loss Association has done much research on hair loss prevention. The Association has showed that men that are suffering from hair loss are vulnerable and many can be taken advantage of, as hair loss is a sensitive subject and many men will do anything possible to keep it from happening. Because of this many companies have stated that they have cures for hair loss and have taken advantage of the many men that are looking for some answers. You should first know that most of the offers to prevent hair loss are not legitimate. Be wary when looking at “cure all” products for hair loss. But there is some good news.

In the past several years there have been progress make in hair loss treatments. Some of these treatments actually work and can prevent you from losing your hair. In the past decade there has been many modern techniques for hair replacement surgery, which can give a man a naturally looking head of hair. But, the research that has been done that has showed the most promise is in the field of medicine. One exciting recent breakthrough is the discovery of 5a reductase inhibitors. These are found in medication, such as Propecia.

There were some drugs that were originally made to treat the prostate glands. These drugs include Proscar and Propecia and Finasteride. What was found is that a side effect of taking these drugs was the growth of new hair. In late 1997 there was a pill for male pattern baldness that was put on the market called Propecia.

The first medication for male pattern baldness that was approved by the FDA was Minoxidil. This is the drug that makes up the popular hair loss treatment Rogaine. Much like the drugs that treated prostate glands Minoxodil was first high blood pressure medicine. But one of the side effects was the growth of hair in areas such as a man’s forehead and the back of their hands. Researches then tried to see it worked on the head of males, which it did but only for temporary results.

So whether you are taking Rogaine or Minoxidil you should begin to use them when you first see the first signs of hair loss. You an also help prevent any further hair loss by using anti-androgens. Some men have found that by using anti-androgens ha even spurned new hair growth. You should also keep up on vitamin and mineral intake when taking any type of topical medication. If you are thinking of trying any type of hair prevention medication you should consult with a physician beforehand
