Hair Loss Treatments for Young Men

The first goal of a hair physician is to educate their patient in terms of the cause, long-term effects, and progression of the patient’s hair loss, as well as the various treatments for it. Since hair transplantation is now widely accepted younger men may take this option. But most reputable hair restoration physicians do not think that hair restoration is the best option to take for younger men that are losing their hair. Hair transplantation is rarely given as a viable option for men under the age of 21.

Here are a few of the reasons that hair transplantation may not be the best idea for a young man:

* Because of the early age the pattern and progression of hair loss generally is not shown.

* If hair transplantation is performed at an earlier age it may be less desirable down the road when the pattern and progression of the hair loss has been fully shown.

* When the hair transplantation surgery is done surgeries in the future will also have to be performed to give the hair a natural appearance.

* It is hard to design a hair transplantation procedure that will look natural
in appearance for the duration of the man’s life.

* If the results of the hair transplantation surgery are undesired in any was it would have to surgically corrected at a later date.

* Considering the patient is younger it may be more difficult for them to make the right, adult, decision about the surgery.

It may be the case that eventually hair transplantation may the best course of action to take for the treatment of hair loss. But an interim option that is recommended often by physicians are non- surgical treatments, such as using Minoxidil (Rogaine) and Finasteride (Propecia). These are the only hair restoration medications that are approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Treatment with these, scientifically proven, drugs can slow down the hair loss and also give the patient the appearance of a fuller head of hair, as they add density to the smaller hair follicles. It is also the case that by slowing down the progression of hair loss in younger men can improve the chances of success for future hair transplantation.

In some cases a physician will perform a “forelock” transplant, which will give the patients immediate improvement in the front of their hairline. It is very rare that a respected hair restoration physician would suggest that a hair restoration surgery for a young man.

Overall the cost of consulting a reputable hair restoration physician can be less that continually trying miracle cures that can be seen everywhere in the media. The professional advice from a reputable physician, who is a member of the ISHRS, can be invaluable to a young man who is worried about his hair loss.
